But as the hours rolled on, so too did the proverbial snowball. With technical issues onboard the F50 they were delayed getting off the mooring and underway, and then in a rush to the racecourse under a high-speed tow, they were caught off guard and quickly capsized. The resultant damage was significant enough to put an end to their race weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe id=\"x8aa2rgac1\" src=\"https:\/\/Sailingworld.dragonforms.com\/x8aa2rgac1\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"width:100%;height:165px;border:none;overflow:hidden;\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were well behind trying to get to the practice start,\u201d Buckley said on a media call late on Friday EST. \u201cAs we turned the corner to go under the bridge, a puff hit\u2014we didn\u2019t have a jib up\u2014and unfortunately led to a capsize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The damage is beyond immediate repair, he added, so there will be no racing for the American team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA series of events usually lead to a situation like this,\u201d Buckley said. \u201cAnd looking back in hindsight kept me up thinking about the what ifs, but that\u2019s not the way life works and it\u2019s not the way this league works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of a full damage assessment from the league\u2019s technical team, Buckley or Canfield could not elaborate on the extent of the damage, but footage post-recovery confirmed significant wing damage, and neither the team nor the league have a wing to spare, leaving the Americans ashore with no options but to watch and learn.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll open our computers with our coach and our race engineer and go over with them what they saw with the practice laps,\u201d Buckley said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be looking at everyone else\u2019s data, so it\u2019s not completely lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Buckley\u2019s body language was telling of his frustration, Canfield was more pragmatic, and happy to put a positive spin on the American team\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n        <section class=\"hydra-container\">\n\n\t\t\t                <div class=\"hydra-canvas\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sailingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/RP2_2447A-1024x684.jpg\" class=\"hydra-image\" alt=\"\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/RP2_2447A-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sailingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/RP2_2447A-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/RP2_2447A-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sailingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/RP2_2447A.jpg 1200w\" \/>                <\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n            <figcaption class=\"caption margin_top_xs full border_1 hydra-figcaption\">\n                <span class=\"hydra-image-caption\">Team strategist and CEO Mike Buckley reported that they were caught off guard by a gust while under tow and were unable to stop the boat from capsizing.<\/span>\n                <span class=\"article_image_credit italic margin_right_xs\">Ricardo Pinto for SailGP<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t\t            <\/figcaption>\n        <\/section>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a great opportunity to learn more than we would normally about the T-foils and what other teams are doing with them,\u201d he said. \u201cThey really change the dynamics of the boat, the loading of the boat, and we\u2019ll figure out who\u2019s going best and what they\u2019re doing.
